05 March , 2024

OBJECTIVE OF THE CONFERENCE:

It is understood that the ethnic identity of the Bengalees first started taking shape during the Pala period as evident from their artistic activities. Thereafter during the late Pala period, the composition of the Charya pada took place, which is the primordial expression of Bengali language. Following this, we trace the gradual development of language and literature in Bengali on a wide scale like the Shri Krishna Kirtan. Later on, a new genre of transcreation in the field of Bengali language and literature comes into the forefront like Shri Krishna Bijaya by Maladhar Basu, The Ramayana by Krittibas Ojha, and The Mahabharata by Kashiram Das, followed by the new narratives of Mangal Kavya literature. Under the colonial influence, the prosaic literature started flourishing on a wide scale and as resultant we are getting the pioneer works of Raja Rammohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore etc. This remarkable journey of Bengali language and literature reached its zenith and established its unique identity in the entire subcontinent as well as in the whole world. This development faced a political crisis in the post-independence period and it was resolved by the formation of a new nation-state, Bangladesh, which was formed on the spirit of linguistic freedom and for which many people sacrificed their lives. This moment of attaining linguistic freedom is celebrated as ‘Bhasa Divas’. Later it is known as International Mother Language Day. Language is the finest expression of culture. Since the historical period till contemporary times we have traced the gradual development of Bengali language and literature as well as the history of the Bengalee race. Now, at present we are fortunate enough to revisit this tangible as well as intangible heritage in this conference.
